Principal's Message [10]
Dear Parents and Families,

I  hope that everyone is having a great start to the fall season. It is a great time to cozy up on the couch to read the October edition of the Winton Woods Primary North Newsletter! This month I want to discuss the 2nd habit: Begin with the End in Mind

This month we will discuss the second habit, Begin With the End in Mind. This teaches us to have goals, makes plans to achieve goals and then carry out the plan. The goals can be long term or short term. This habit teaches us to visualize in our mind what we cannot presently see in front of us. Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired destination. You must use Habit 1, Be Proactive to make Habit 2 happen!

When you Begin with the End in Mind, you should decide what is important and what is not important. Weed out the things that are not important so that you can focus on your goal. Doing this will improve your outcome and the rate at which it comes to you.

Many people create personal mission statements (a mission that you want to live by so you can make your goals become a reality) to achieve Habit #2. Students usually create long term and short goals. Some examples of goals for students would be to get a 100% on the week’s spelling test (short term) or move up 3 Guided Reading Levels by the end of the school year (long term). A personal goal for a student might relate to sports. When I was young and swam on a swim team I wrote down the time I wanted to beat so that I could make it to junior nationals in 100 meter backstroke. I posted this time on my bedroom door so that I would see it every day. It helped me focus and reach my goal!! I was practicing Habit 2 and didn't even know it!

Make Habit #2 a priority in your family. Have your students create a long and short term academic goal and write them down. Post them on the refrigerator so that they see them every day!

Children’s books that you can read and discuss the concept of beginning with the end in mind with your child:
  • The Very Busy Spider, by Eric Carle
  • The Lion and the Mouse, by Jerry Pinkney
  • · When I Grow Up, by Sean Covey
Sincerely,
Miss Kathryn Klei, PN Principal
