Principal's Message [9]
Dear Parents and Families,
Habit 1: Be Proactive
The first habit that the students at Primary North are learning is “Be Proactive.” Being proactive really is about taking responsibility for your choices and actions. Proactive people realize that they have the freedom to choose how they are going to react in a situation. Proactive people are responsible and do not blame others for things that are happening. Proactive people use proactive language---I will, I can, I prefer, etc. Reactive people use language like—I can’t, I have to, etc. People who are proactive people focus their time and energy on things that they can control.
Proactive people:
· realize that they have the freedom to choose how they are going to react in a situation,
· are responsible and do not blame others for things that are happening,
· use proactive language---I will, I can, I prefer, etc. (As opposed to reactive people use language like—I can’t, I have to, etc.),
· focus their time and energy on things that they can control.
We are teaching this habit to the students in many situations. A few examples are:
· When students are resolving a conflict on the playground, we teach them to be proactive because proactive people pause and base their reactions on values not anger.
· Students participate in group work in both math and reading. We teach them to use positive and proactive language during this group work time.
· Students role play situations and determine how a proactive person would respond and how a reactive person would respond. Then the students discuss which response would get a better long-term result.
Children’s books that you can read and discuss being proactive with your child :
· The Little Engine That Could, by Watty Piper
· A Day’s Work, by Eve Bunting
· Just the Way I Am, by Sean Covey
· Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, by Judith Viorst
I invite you to read these books, talk to your child/ren about what it means to be a proactive person and how they can use it in their everyday lives.
Sincerely,
Miss Kathryn Klei, PN Principal
